What are the best ones out there?

I don't mess around when it comes to smartwatches. I want a watch that can take a beating but also have the high-tech features that I need.

If you’re an outdoor enthusiasts, adventurer, or someone works in physically demanding environments, you would likely agree.

Lots of new watches have come out recently since Covid, so I've reviewed the latest rugged smartwatches that are built for tough outdoor environments and can survive knocks, drops, water and extreme temperatures breaking or malfunctioning due to their military-grade durability.

You're here because you want the features of traditional smartwatches: big screens, health-tracking capabilities, apps and more, but with a hardened exterior that can keep up with your rigorous routine.

Tactical, or outdoor or however you call it, I've rounded-up my favorite most durable smartwatches (some that I own and personally reviewed, others that come recommended by others and of which their specifications speak for themselves).

From the Apple Watch Ultra to Garmin and Samsung offerings, there are many great options.

Our Favorite Tough Smartwatches

Below are our favorite and and toughest choice in a smartwatch on the market today:

  • Garmin Fenix 7 — Top overall
  • SUUNTO 7 — Super for sports and fitness
  • Apple Watch Ultra — Apple’s toughest watch
  • Garmin Instinct Solar — Greatest Tactical / Military style smartwatch
  • SAMSUNG Galaxy Watch 46mm — Best bargain
  • Casio G-Shock Move — Most impact-resistant

1. Garmin Fenix 7

The Garmin Fenix 7 is the latest addition to the Garmin lineup of sports watches, and it comes with a whole bunch of new software features and improvements in hardware durability.

The watch also features a touch screen, and the solar charging capabilities have been increased. In addition to the Fenix 7, Garmin has also launched their next-generation Epix sports watch, which can be thought of as a Fenix 7 with an AMOLED display.

The Fenix 7 lineup has been condensed, and now includes the base level Fenix 7, the Fenix 7 solar, and the Fenix 7 sapphire solar. All models now come with maps and music, and the solar editions come in three different sizes: 42mm, 47mm, and the largest 7X at 51mm. The X size model comes with a flashlight, which is more than just a flashlight.

The Fenix 7s have a steel bezel and steel back, while the Sapphire solar models have a titanium bezel and titanium back. The lenses on the base level Fenix 7s use Corning Gorilla Glass DX, while the solar non-Sapphire models use Garmin's Power Glass. We love this as it's way way tougher than Gorilla Glass. Saphire has a Mohs' hardness of 9! Only diamond is harder at 10. The Sapphire models have Power Sapphire, which is sapphire with solar charging. The new cases on all sizes now have protected lugs, and a little guard around the start and stop button to prevent accidental presses.

The Fenix 7 has a 4th gen heart rate sensor with pulse ox measurement and a touch screen along with physical buttons. The touch screen allows for easy navigation of widget glances, text input, and map browsing with zooming functionality.

The Fenix 7s have a new real-time stamina and visual race predictor feature for training feedback. The real-time stamina feature has a new data page showing stamina and potential fields with pace and heart rate for other data fields when added to a run profile.

The Fenix 7's biggest new feature is its touch screen, which uses the Sony GPS chipset with a built-in touchscreen controller that Garmin had previously not enabled. The addition of the touch screen is a significant move forward for Garmin sports watches.

"The sapphire solar editions of the Fenix 7s, these have 32 gigabytes of storage, so these have the topo maps pre-installed, and then the 7X model of the sapphire solar also comes with that flashlight."

The Fenix 7s have improved battery life, with up to 11 days in smartwatch mode for the base model and up to 37 hours in GPS mode for the 7s. The Fenix 7X Solar model has a top-mounted flashlight that allows for hands-free use.

The new dual-frequency GPS and significantly improved battery life make it suitable for extreme GPS-heavy endurance athletes. The watch also has a trio of new $99 bands for these activities. However, its size may make it less dressy than a regular Apple Watch.

Overall, the Apple Watch Ultra is a great option for those looking for extreme activity tracking capabilities. Combine the above into a long and detailed product review of this watch, highlighting all important features

The Apple Watch Ultra is the latest addition to Apple's lineup of smartwatches. Aimed at extreme users such as adventurers, hikers, divers, runners, and triathletes, the Ultra has been designed to withstand the rigors of extreme activities. The watch is made of a titanium case with a ceramic back and has bigger buttons and a bigger crown. The display is protected by a flat sapphire crystal with a raised lip. The Ultra has a 49mm diagonal size and comes only in silver color.

One of the key features of the Apple Watch Ultra is its tough design, which makes it suitable for extreme activities. The watch has extra microphone and speakers for better audio quality, a dual-frequency GPS for more accurate and reliable GPS, a WR 100 water resistance rating for submergence up to a 100 meters, and a new 2000 nits max brightness display. The display is bright and easy to read in direct sunlight, which is a significant improvement over previous models.

The Apple Watch Ultra has premium features and specs that are attractive to extreme users. It has a bright international orange action button that can be mapped to eight things, and the watch's battery life can last up to two full days and two full nights. The battery life is impressive, given the number of features the watch has.

The Ultra has been designed for extreme activities like scuba diving, hiking, and endurance sports. It features WR 100 water resistance and a new dive app that tracks depth and safety metrics underwater. The new dive app is basic and can provide information like depth and safety stops. However, Apple has partnered with a third-party company to develop the Oceanic+ app that provides advanced metrics such as air integration, making the Ultra a potential replacement for dedicated dive computers.

The watch also has a new Compass app that lets users set unlimited waypoints and track their exact walking path. The new dual-frequency GPS and significantly improved battery life make it suitable for extreme GPS-heavy endurance athletes. The watch can track elevation, distance, and pace more accurately than previous models. The watch's battery life can last up to 60 hours, making it suitable for ultra-endurance activities.

The Ultra comes with a trio of new $99 bands designed for specific activities. The Trail Band is suitable for hiking and has a reflective thread that makes it visible at night. The Alpine Loop is designed for climbing and has a durable construction that can withstand wear and tear. The Ocean Band is suitable for water activities and is made of a water-resistant material.

One of the potential downsides of the Apple Watch Ultra is its size. At 49mm diagonal size, the watch is more massive than previous models, which may make it less dressy. The watch's size may also make it challenging to wear under a shirt sleeve.

Just How rugged is the Apple Watch Ultra compared to a regular Apple Watch Series 8?

  • Hiking and stumbling: The Apple Watch Ultra fared better in a fall compared to the Series 8, with its crown functioning well and no visible damage.
  • Scraping on rocks: The Ultra's sapphire crystal remained scratch-free, while the Series 8 showed more scratches and a stuck crown.
  • Washing off dirt: The Ultra was easier to clean compared to the Series 8.
  • Dragging outside a car: The Ultra's screen remained flawless even after being dragged face down on a road, while the Series 8 had significant damage.
  • Smashing into surfaces: The Ultra's screen stayed intact after multiple impacts on various surfaces, whereas the Series 8 cracked after just one hit.
  • Throwing at the ground: The Ultra survived multiple throws with only minor damage to the titanium body, while its screen remained mostly unscathed.

4. Garmin Instinct Solar

I recently took another look at the Garmin Instinct Solar, and I was still impressed by its functionality and features, particularly its solar-powered battery. In fact, with just a little bit of sunlight, the Instinct Solar can run indefinitely, making it a truly unique watch in terms of battery life. Nothing compares in 2023, just like nothing did in 2020 when it came out.

military smartwatch garmin instinct

The Instinct Solar has a very rugged and tactical appearance, with a large 15 millimeter thick plastic case that's waterproof up to 100 meters. Its monochromatic screen is powered by a solar panel, which delivers a crisp display that can be seen from multiple angles. The watch also boasts a military spec for shock water resistance and thermal, making it an excellent choice for outdoor adventurers.

One thing to note is that the Instinct Solar is not compatible with the Connect IQ store, so you won't be able to download any new widgets. However, in terms of smartwatch functionality, it's very similar to other Garmin devices. You can track almost anything and there are powerful navigation tools built into the watch. In fact, you get more navigation features on the Instinct Solar than you do on other watches from competing brands.

Compared to the Garmin Fenix 6, the Instinct Solar is definitely designed for a different market. While the Fenix 6 has a full mapping function, music on board, Wi-Fi syncing, and more training metrics, the Instinct Solar is more minimalist. It's a great watch for hikers, adventurers, and long-distance trekkers who want access to an altimeter or compass. It's also a good option for people who like the simplicity of a Coros device.

I did find that the wrist-based heart rate sensors on the Instinct Solar were a little off, and it took a minute for them to catch up to the other two sensors I tested. However, the Polar H9 chest strap collected really accurate data, which is the most important factor. And with the Instinct Solar's solar-powered battery, I was able to gain seven days of standby time in just one hour of charging in blaring hot sunlight.

NanaDC Badass Rating: 4/5

  • The watch's battery life is vastly extended through solar charging, which is great for sustainability. The solar charging feature, combined with the extended battery life, allows me to use the watch for longer periods without worrying about charging it frequently.
  • This tough GPS watch is constructed to U.S. military standard 810 for thermal shock and water resistance, making it perfect for outdoor adventures.
  • The watch features a built-in 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter, along with multiple Global Navigation Satellite Systems GPS Glonass and Galileo, which are crucial for accurate navigation.

NanaDC Suave Rating: 2/5

  • The graphite color of the Garmin Instinct Solar contributes to its rugged and masculine appearance, making it an attractive choice for those seeking a durable and stylish watch.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 45.5 x 45.5 x 14.5 mm
  • Weight: 52 g
  • Battery life: Up to 54 days in smartwatch mode, up to 54 days in GPS mode (solar charging)
  • Water resistance: 100 m
  • Display: 1.2-inch transflective display
  • Sensors: GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, accelerometer, altimeter, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, pulse oximeter, temperature sensor
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
  • Storage: 32 GB
  • Operating system: Garmin OS

Overall, I think the Garmin Instinct Solar is a solid watch that does a lot of things well. It's not cheap, but it's unique in that it delivers unlimited battery life with just a little bit of sunlight. It's a great choice for anyone who wants a watch that's tough, functional, and built to last.

5. SAMSUNG Galaxy Watch 46mm

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 46mm is a smartwatch that is still worth buying today, especially with its current price of under $100. The watch offers a tough design with a rotating bezel and stainless steel frame, which may not be suitable for users who prefer a lightweight watch. The 360 by 360 AMOLED display is still sharp, although it has a lower pixel density compared to the Galaxy Watch 3 and Watch Active 2.

In terms of health features, the watch lacks a blood pressure monitor and ECG feature, which may be important to some users. However, it still offers heart rate monitoring and basic workout modes. The auto sleep tracking is accurate, but the watch's weight may make it uncomfortable to wear while napping.

The battery life of the Galaxy Watch 46mm is impressive, with up to four days of usage on a single charge. It has received two major updates in the form of Tizen 4 and 5 and recently received the One UI 3.0 update, which gives it the same UI as the latest Galaxy Watch 3. However, Samsung has decided to ditch Tizen OS in favor of Google's Wear OS, which means there may not be major updates for this smartwatch in the future.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 46 x 46 x 10.8 mm
  • Weight: 57 g
  • Battery life: Up to 40 hours
  • Water resistance: 5 ATM
  • Display: 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass DX
  • Sensors: GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, accelerometer, altimeter, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, ECG sensor, blood oxygen sensor
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
  • Storage: 32 GB
  • Operating system: Tizen OS

Overall, what’s there not to love? The Galaxy Watch 46mm is a great smartwatch if you prioritize battery life, having thousands of slick watch faces, rich notifications from Android phones, and basic workout modes and heart rate tracking. While it may not have the latest features, its current price point makes it a great option!!

6. Casio G-Shock Move

I recently got my hands on the new Casio G-Shock Move GBD-H1000 and I must say, it's quite a unique and functional watch. It's the first G-Shock watch that comes with a built-in wrist-based optical heart rate sensor, along with other training features such as VO2 max and recovery time. Although the software is relatively new, I expect updates in the future to make it even better.

I tested this watch thoroughly, using it for running, mountain biking, road biking, indoor cycling, strength training, and high-intensity interval training. The watch is designed to be shock-resistant and vibration-resistant, making it perfect for extreme activities. It's made with a combination of plastic and stainless steel, and the complex shaker design directs shock to the mineral glass display and buttons.

The G-Shock Move GBD-H1000 has five sensors, including a heart rate sensor, barometric altimeter, compass, temperature, and a three-axis accelerometer. The watch band isn't the softest, but it works just fine. The watch weighs 101 grams, making it one of the largest watches I've ever worn. In terms of battery life, it's advertised to last up to 14 hours with normal GPS reception, and up to 18 hours if you choose the long load.

The watch has various displays, including daily activity levels, training status, vo2 max, recovery time, and more. You can also set up to five different workout timers with up to 20 sets within each timer. The watch also has a stopwatch, compass, and activity history where you can see your total stats for the month and dive into activity details.

The G-Shock Move GBD-H1000 also has a training status mode that shows your vo2 max and suggested recovery time. The watch can also receive notifications, although you can't reply from the watch itself. There are also general watch settings that you can access by holding down the upper left-hand key for about two seconds. You can adjust your home timezone, set an alternate time zone, set alarms, adjust profile information, and more.

All in all, the Casio G-Shock Move GBD-H1000 is a great watch for those who love extreme activities and want a functional, durable, and reliable watch that can track their workouts and daily activity levels. Although the software is still new, updates are expected to make it even better in the future. I highly recommend this watch!

I tried out the watch during various activities, including running, mountain biking, road biking, indoor cycling, weight training, and high-intensity interval training. Overall, the watch performed well in terms of GPS and heart rate monitoring, but there were a few issues with the calorie calculations and vo2 max values. The watch can't pair with external sensors like speed and cadence sensors or cycling power meters, which could throw off the accuracy of some of the metrics.

Despite these issues, I think Casio did a good job with the hardware. The heart rate sensor was impressive, especially during mountain biking, and the barometric altimeter performed well. However, the software could use some improvement. The watch only has one activity profile, which limits its versatility, and the calorie calculations and vo2 max values need some work.

Overall, I think the G-Shock Move GBD-H1000 has potential, especially for Casio's first serious attempt at a fitness and sports watch. With some software updates, this watch could be a great option for anyone looking for a durable, reliable watch for their workouts.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 45.5 x 45.5 x 14.5 mm
  • Weight: 52 g
  • Battery life: Up to 14 days in smartwatch mode, up to 19 hours in GPS mode
  • Water resistance: 200 m
  • Display: 1.2-inch transflective display
  • Sensors: GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, accelerometer, altimeter, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, pulse oximeter, temperature sensor
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
  • Storage: 32 GB
  • Operating system: Casio OS

Worst Rugged Smartwatch - Amazfit T-Rex Pro

School me on the Top Rugged Outdoor Smartwatches in [currentyear]

This watch isn't good, don't buy it--even if you get it at a cheap price. That's the consensus on the Amazfit T-Rex. It's out of date.

  1. Subpar GPS Tracking: The watch’s GPS tracking leaves much to be desired. Despite boasting support for 4 satellite constellations, you can only select three options to link GPS with. This limitation can be a real letdown for users who rely on accurate GPS tracking for their outdoor activities.
  2. Questionable Sleep Tracking: The sleep tracking feature of the watch has been called into question. For a device that promises to provide a comprehensive overview of your health, this can be a significant disappointment.
  3. Limited OS with No Third-Party Apps: The watch uses Huami’s custom software, which does not support third-party apps. This lack of integration can be a major inconvenience for users who want to sync their data with popular fitness or lifestyle apps.
  4. Flawed Automatic Workout Detection: The automatic workout detection feature of the watch is flawed. This can be frustrating for users who want to keep track of their workouts without the hassle of manually inputting each session.
  5. Uninspiring Design: Despite its rugged appeal, the design of the watch has been described as lackluster. This could be a turn-off for users who value aesthetics as much as functionality in their wearables.
  6. Confusing ‘PAI’ Scores: The watch provides ‘PAI’ scores, but these can be confusing. This lack of clarity can make it difficult for users to understand and utilize this feature to its full potential.
  7. Issues with the Watch Band: Some users have reported that once the watch band breaks, the replacements offered by third parties are not as good as the original. This can be a significant drawback for a watch that is marketed for its durability.
  8. End of Life Updates: The watch is considered end of life, so users shouldn’t expect more updates. This can be a deal-breaker for those who want to keep their devices up-to-date with the latest features and improvements.

What You Need to Know About Durable Smartwatches

Firstly, durability does not necessarily mean sacrificing features. Durable smartwatches often come with all the common smartwatch features that cater to fitness enthusiasts, such as heart rate monitors, step counters, and GPS tracking. Some models even include “techy” features such as mobile payments and music storage.

When selecting a durable smartwatch, it's important to consider the level of durability you need. Some regular smartwatches may only be water-resistant, meaning they can withstand splashes of water but cannot be submerged. We feel that smartwatches should be fully waterproof, allowing you to wear them while swimming or engaging in water sports. Additionally, you want to look for watches that are dustproof and shockproof to ensure they can withstand a range of environments.

It's also essential to consider the battery life of a durable smartwatch. Since these watches often have a range of features, they require a significant amount of power to operate. Look for watches with long battery life to ensure they can last through a full day or even several days of use.
